CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Bengals didnt wait long or look far for their next offensive co-ordinator, promoting Hue Jackson on Thursday shortly after Jay Gruden was introduced as the next head coach in Washington. Dennis Rodman Jersey . Jackson has brought his career full-circle in Cincinnati, where he coached the wide receivers from 2004-06. He was Oaklands head coach in 2011 and pushed for the trade that brought quarterback Carson Palmer from Cincinnati at midseason in exchange for a first-round and second-round draft pick. The Raiders finished 8-8 and failed to reach the playoffs that season, resulting in Jacksons firing. He returned to Cincinnati as an assistant, and coached the running backs last season. The Bengals won the AFC North with an 11-5 mark but lost their opening playoff game for the third straight season, tying the NFL record. Andy Dalton had three second-half turnovers during a 27-10 loss to San Diego at Paul Brown Stadium. Gruden co-ordinated the Bengals West Coast offence each of the last three seasons and helped Dalton and receiver A.J. Green develop into one of the best young pass-and-catch tandems in the league. He was hired as the Redskins head coach on Thursday. "We are blessed to have a staff that allows us to promote from within," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It keeps some of the continuity with our offensive team, yet we get new direction and fire from an aggressive and innovative coaching mind. Hues expertise in all aspects of football and coaching is very wide." The Bengals finished the season with the 10th-ranked offence in the NFL. The offence flourished at home and often struggled on the road. Cincinnati won all eight home games during the regular season, tying the club record. Dalton set club records for touchdown passes and yards passing last season, but his struggles in the playoffs continued. In three playoff games, he has thrown only one touchdown pass with four interceptions. Jackson also has been the offensive co-ordinator for the Redskins, Falcons and Raiders. Defensive co-ordinator Mike Zimmer also is interviewing for head coaching jobs. Cincinnatis defence finished No. 3 in the league last season. He was 88. The Australian driver -- known as Sir Jack in racing paddocks around the world after he was knighted in 1979 -- won world titles in 1959 and 1960 and became the only F1 driver to win a world championship in a car of his own construction -- the rear-engined BT19 -- which he drove to the title in 1966. The following year the Brabham team won its second successive world championship when New Zealander Denny Hulme drove the BT20 to victory. Brabham won his final Grand Prix race in South Africa in 1970 before retiring from F1 at the age of 44. Brabham continued to compete at different venues after his F1 retirement and his three sons, Geoff, Gary and David also had professional racing careers. Two of his grandsons, Matthew and Sam, are racing in the U.S. and Britain. "Its a very sad day for all of us," Brabhams youngest son, David, said in a statement. "He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind." The family said Brabham was a brilliant engineer, and technological innovations developed by the Brabham team helped to shape F1. In March 2009, David Brabham helped celebrate a 50-year anniversary for his father. Sebring International Raceway in Florida was the venue where Jack Brabham wrapped up his first Formula 1 championship on Dec. 12, 1959, pushing his Cooper-Climax T51 across the finish line for a fourth-place finish. "I was leading the race right up to the last 500 yards and the car ran out of petrol," Brabham said in an interview with The Associated Press at his home on the Gold Coast, Queensland state, in 2009. "I coasted to about 50 yards away and I pushed the car over the line. If I would have received any assistance I would have been disqualified. I managed to finish fourth, which was enough to win the championship." That race was won by Brabhams close friend, business associate and race-car designer Bruce McLaren of New Zealand. Brabham was not well enough to make the Sebring trip in 2009, but David re-enacted his fathers famous finish and also drove a handful of laps in the same car in which his father won that 1959 championship. Jack Brabhams career accomplishments were lengthy. In addition to his three world titles and 126 races from 1955 to 1970, he won the constructors championship in 1966 and 1967. He had 14 Grand Prix wins and 31 podium finishes. Australian Grand Prix chairman Ron Walker said Brabham would be "remembered as one of motorsports most influential figures" adding that his feat of winning the world championship in a car bearing his own name was unlikely to ever be replicated. "The contributions that Sir Jack made to the sport as wwell as the Australian Grand Prix will never be forgotten and his legacy will continue to resonate among drivers and fans," Walker said. Tobias Harris Jersey. . Born on April 2, 1926, in the southern Sydney suburb of Hurstville, John Arthur Brabham grew up driving and maintaining his fathers fruit and vegetable delivery vehicles. After a brief career in engineering, he joined the Australian Air Force as a flight mechanic and later set up his own engineering works in Sydney and became a pilot. He won four Australian championships between 1948 and 1951. In 1955, Brabham moved to England and teamed up with John and Charles Cooper to make his Grand Prix debut at Aintree, England. He returned to Australia after he retired and his new interests included developing a farm, car dealership and aviation company. He was also a spokesman for a major Japanese automaker and maintained his interest in the sport, visiting numerous major international races. "On track he was always the toughest of tough competitors, tough sometimes to the point at which Id wonder how could such a nice bloke out of a car grow such horns and a tail inside one!" British great Stirling Moss wrote about Brabham in the introduction to a book about one of his biggest race rivals. "If you ever raced against Jack youd really know youd been in a race ... (he) played the game as if your life depends on it, no quarter asked, and absolutely none given. To his natural driving ability he added a deeper technical understanding." "That was a reasonable comment," Brabham told the AP, smiling, when he read the excerpt. Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles described Brabham, a four-time Indianapolis 500 starter, as "the patriarch of a racing dynasty." "Every time an Indy car runs at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you can find roots that trace back to Jack Brabhams rear-engined Cooper Climax T54 that he drove to 9th place in the 1961 Indianapolis 500," Boles said. "In addition to starting the rear-engine revolution at IMS, Brabham competed ... and designed race cars that competed in the 500." Later in life, Brabham suffered from poor hearing and macular degeneration that prevented him from reading road signs, making driving difficult. He said a kidney illness "really clipped my wings," but he lived a busy life in a home overlooking the eighth hole of a resort golf course and sprinkled with mementos of his feats. Those included a glass-encased model replica of the Cooper Climax that he pushed over that Sebring finish line, and photos of the great driver with prime ministers, sporting personalities and fellow competitors. "The big aim now is to go out without an enemy in the world -- Im going to outlive," them he said in the 2009 interview. He is survived by his second wife, Margaret, and his three sons. The Blue Jays are still hanging in there in the American League East. Wayne Simmonds Jersey . With 63 games left to play, theyre tied with the Yankees at three full games back of Baltimore. Theyre also just 1 1/2 games back of Seattle for the second Wild Card spot. So essentially, the Jays season is down to this. Forty-one of their remaining 63 games are against their own division. Over the last few years, their record against the AL East has turned them into also-rans down the stretch when the schedule toughens up. In three of the past four seasons, their mark at this point was almost identical. In 2012, they were 51-49. In 2011, they were 50-49 and in 2010 they were 50-48-1, with the one being a suspended game. Right now in 2014, they are 51-48. The only exception was last year, when they were actually a little worse at 45-54 on July 23. Of the four previous seasons, with Alex Anthopoulos as GM, the Jays had a winning record after 99 games just once. In 2010, the Jays went (35-29) to finish at 85-77-1. If the Jays can win 35 of their final 63 games this time around, their 86 victories may or may not put them into the postseason. The Blue Jays next 10 games are against the Easts traditional powers - Boston and the Yankees - with both having off-seasons by their standards. The Jays kick off this stretch with four at home beginning Monday night at Rogers Centre against the BoSox. Then its on to New York for three and then to Fenway for three more. Considering they probably wont have Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind and Brett Lawrie for at least seven of those 10 games - and perhaps all 10 - its going to be a daunting task indeed. Over the past four seasons, the Blue Jays cumulative record against Boston is only 37-42. Theyve also had a losing record against the Red Sox in three of those four seasons. The only exception being the 2012 season, when the Jays held an (11-7) edge in the year of the Bobby Valentine managerial fiasco. The Jays record against the Yankees over that four year span has been even worse. Theyre 32-50 in all, with 2010 being the only season they had a winning edge at 10-8 and remember the Jays have also dropped 16 in a row at Yankee Stadium. The Jays desperately need to go at least 6-4 or better over the next 10 to tide them over until everyone gets healthy. Then and only then, will John Gibbons and company have a chance at staying in the race for first in the AL East until the end. For the record, the Jays are 18-17 this season against the East, including 4-2 against Boston and 3-6 versus the Yankees. They have 13 left against Boston and 10 with the Yankees. Thats more than a third of their remaining games and they likely hold the key to having any chance of winning the division. Grabbing the second Wild Card slot ahead of Seattle is the emergency safety hatch. The Jays still have seven games left with the Ms - three on the road and four at home. But taking the second Wild Card would likely mean a one game playoff with the As or the Angels out on the West Coast - not exactly the most desirable situation. The Blue Jays Triple A affiliate in Buffalo has lost seven games in a row and is having almost as much trouble most nights scoring runs as the Jays. Just the same, Kevin Pillar - who spent 26 games up with the big club this season - has been on fire. Hes tied for the International League lead in doubles with 27, which would have been the team high for the entire season a year ago. He also leads the Bisons in hits with 87, triples (with three) and is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (15). On the flip side, righty reliever Steve Delabar still hasnt rediscovered his A game. In eight appearances over 10 innings, he is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA with nine strikeouts and six walks. I got asked the other day if I could remember the last Major League player to play at all nine positions in one game. Off the top of my head I could only remember the first two - Bert Campaneris, who turned the trick for the Kansas City As on Sept. 8, 1965, and Cesar Tovar of the Minnesota Twins who accomplished the feat on Sept. 22, 1968 - against (go figure) Campaneris and the As. Playing all nine positions in a game is more of a novelty event, used by teams who are basically playing in nothing games near the end of the season. Its only happened two other times in Major League history, the two I couldnt remember and both happened in 2000. Scott Sheldon and the Texas Rangers were playing at Comiskey and the White Sox blew out to a big lead early and went on to hammer Texas 13-1. Sheldon actually didnt get into the game for the Rangers until the fourth inning, but still managed to play all nine spots on the diamond. That was on Sept. 6. About three weeks later, with the Twins playing Detroit on Oct. 1 - the final day of the regular season - Shane Halter of the Tigers became the most recent Major Leaguer to play all nine positions in one game. Not only that, he went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in. But the two earlier games each had something unique about them - which may be why I remember them so well. When Campaneris pitched in 1965, he pitched lefty-to-lefty hitters and then switched to righty-to-righty hitters. Cesar Tovar actually was the starting pitcher for the Twins in his game in 1968. Will it ever happen again? Maybe not, but I guess we can never say never. If I had to bet on a Blue Jay doing it, it would probably be Steve Tolleson. Claude Giroux Jersey . The Sharks were beaten by first-half tries from Scarlets scrum-half Gareth Davies and winger DTH van der Merwe. And Van der Merwes second touchdown after 57 minutes ended the contest, with Scarlets fly-half Rhys Patchell adding three penalties and two conversions to underpin a comfortable win ahead of next Saturdays daunting assignment against Pool 3 favourites Saracens in north London. Liam Williams is tackled by Byron McGuigan But the Scarlets continued to dominate territory and possession, and extended their lead following more good work by Wales no 9 Davies. He made initial headway with a burst, before his half-back partner Patchell kicked towards the right wing, and Canada international Van der Merwe gathered and finished in one movement to restore a 13-point advantage.Mugford applied the final scoring act of a lively opening period when he kicked a penalty just before the break, but the Scarlets were good value for a 21-11 interval advantage. And Sale did not help their cause when they were temporarily reduced to 14 men just eight minutes after the restart when a high tackle by Harrison on Scarlets skipper Ken Owens resulted in French referee Romain Poite sin-binning the prop.Van der Merwes second try sealed the deal, and Sale then collected a second yellow card, this time for substitute Andrei Ostrikov following a high tackle, which left the closing 15 minutes all about whether or not the Scarlets could claim a bonus point. It did not materialise, though, as both sides failed to add any further points. You can watch Liverpool v Man Utd, plus Englands tour of Bangladesh and the British Masters on Sky Sports. The American Hockey League is amending one of its rules after Bridgeport Sound Tigers goaltender David Leggio intentionally knocked his net off the moorings during a game Sunday night. Karl Malone Jersey . According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the amended rule would provide officials the right to hand down a game misconduct to the offending goalkeeper. A penalty shot would then be awarded, which could be taken by anyone on the ice and the replacement goalie would face the shot. Leggio, who is playing his first season with the New York Islanders affiliate, was facing a 2-on-0 rush by the Springfield Falcons when he dislodged the net to force a stoppage in play. Reto Berra stopped 25 shots for Calgary (21-28-7). Bourque, in only his second game against his old team, scored the winner for the Canadiens at 16:15 of the second period. Bourque was rather fortuitous on the play, notching his eighth goal of the year when a Brandon Prust pass banked off his left leg and beat Berra. The Flames have now lost four straight on the road. The Canadiens, meanwhile, have yet to lose in regulation this year when leading after two periods (25-0-3). Its a big week for NCAA college players. Phil Esposito Jersey . The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that a group of Northwestern college football players, led by quarterback Kain Colter, are employees and have the right to form a union and bargain collectively. The NLRB is a U.S. government agency that deals with labor law. This matters because as a bargaining unit, players as a group can now start to ask for more - a lot more. Think about how baseball was changed when the players unionized and fought for their rights. So this decision will potentially have a major impact on college sports and force the NCAA to change how it does business. For decades, the NCAA has offered scholarships in exchange for athletic services. However, the NLRB says that falls short, and with this ruling, threatens to tear down the very foundation of the NCAA and its billion dollar business model. Control Control Control In concluding that players were entitled to employee status, NLRB director Peter Ohr focused on the level of control that Northwestern exercised over its student athletes. That level of control, he said, moved players from being primarily students to being athletes that have earned the right to unionize. If they were primarily students, they couldnt unionize. In ruling that Northwestern players were athletes first (and students second), he relied on a bunch of factors to demonstrate control over the players that no longer made them primarily students (like others on campus) and effectively turned them into employees. Here are a few of these factors: (a) The NCAA limits athletic activities to 20 hours per week during the season and 8 hours during the offseason. Despite that, Northwestern players dedicated 50 to 60 hours a week on football during training camp, and another 40 to 50 hours a week during the football season. While the workouts that would take players beyond the 20 hour cap were deemed "voluntary", players knew if they didnt show up there would be serious consequences. Some days players had to engage in football related activities from 5:45am to 10:30pm. Devoting so many hours a week to football was a massive consideration for the NLRB. The players basically had a second job: football. (b) Players allege they were steered away from certain courses because they conflicted with football. Colter wanted to go to medical school but was discouraged from taking a pre-med course because it conflicted with his football schedule. He ultimately ended up transferring to psychology. (c) Players have to abide by restrictive social media policies, and cant refuse a friend request on Facebook from a coach. They have to let the coach know the type of car they drive. As well, players are subject to alcohol and drug policies, as well as anti-gambling and anti-hazing policies. A violation of these policies can result in serious sanctions, including suspensions and revocation of scholarships. (d) If a player wants to get a job off campus, he needs permission. Hes required to live on campus while a freshman and sophomore. He also cant do interviews without the coachs approval. (e) The player cant profit off his own likeness and image; thats reserved for the university and the NCAA. (f) A player is prohibited from swearing in public, and if a player "embarrasses" the team, he can be suspended for one game. A second offense can result in a 1 year suspension. Players who transfer to another school to play football must sit out a year before they can compete for the new school. (g) During the regular season, the players must wear a suit to home games. (h) Players are required to remain within a six-hour radius of campus prior to football games. These are just some of the factors that Ohr relied on when he concluded that the university was exercising a level of control that converted the students into employees. Also important was that Northwestern was providing compensation in the form of scholarships in return for services that had nothing to do with academics. All The Benchmarks of an Employment Relationship So when it all shakes out, Ohr believed that this case had all the standard benchmarks of an employer/employee relationship, including controlling the employees schedule, the discretion to hire, fire or suspend the employee and evidence of compensation. What Do the Players Want They want to negotiate limits on practice time and medical benefits. Thats their starting point. They will probably also ask for a stipend to reflect cost of attendance. Remember that scholarships cover a lot – living expenses, tuition, room and board and book fees – but not everything. At some point, players may ask to be paid. The NCAA is big business. The media deal for NCAA football is a $7.3 billion/10 year deal, while the March Madness deal is valued at $10.8 billion over 14 years. Northwestern generated $235 million in revenue between 2003 and 2012 off things like ticket sales, television contracts, merchandise sales and licensing agreements. In 2012-2013 alone, the program generated $30.1 million in revenue, while spending about $5 million on scholarships. The university also says that its expenses add up to about $22 million all in for the football program. In theory, the players as employees could also be entitled to disability insurance, workers compensation and maybe even a pension. They could also be taxed on non-scholarship income they receive. Next Steps: Appeal Central As for next steps, the players will hold a vote to form a union, while Northwestern appeals the decision to the next level at the NLRB. If Northwestern is unsuccessful on appeal, they will probably refuse to bargain with the students and take the matter to federal court. So we could still be years away from a final decision. That being said, this was a potentially historic win for the players and a step closer toward sharing in the billion dollar pie that is the NCAA. Chase Headley added four hits for San Diego, including a two-run triple in the seventh inning to break open a close game. Kevin Quackenbush stepped in for Kennedy when play resumed. Kennedy (7-9) finished with nine strikeouts, boosting his team-leading total this season to 125. He allowed four hits in seven innings, including Drew Stubbs leadoff home run in the fourth. The outing by Kennedy extended a strong run by the Padres rotation. San Diegos starting pitchers have allowed only six runs over the last seven games, helping the Padres go 5-2 in that stretch. The Padres improved to 28-4 this season when scoring four or more runs, the second-best mark in baseball behind Washington, which is 39-3 when scoring at least four times. Slumping Colorado lost for the 18th time in the last 21 games. With the score tied at 1-1 in the sixth, Tommy Medica hit a one-out double and Rivera followed with a double to left. Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Radko Gudas faces a possible suspension pending a disciplinary hearing with the NHLs department of player safety. David Njoku Jersey . Gudas was assessed a match penalty for a hit to the head of Stars forward Antoine Roussel at 7:33 of the first period in Saturdays 5-2 loss to Dallas. Roussel got up slowly and passed his concussion testing before eventually returning to score a goal. "I give him credit for playing, but for the most part I didnt like his game after that," head coach Lindy Ruff said aftert the game. "Hes a tough nut, he passed his test and hes going to play, but I dont think he was his normal self." Roussel is expected to be reevaluated on Sunday. Jim Brown Jersey . A-Rod is also disqualified from any post-season play. So at the tender age of 38, he will miss all of next season. His head snapped back from the impact and hit the floor. The All-Star power forward was all right afterward, a relief for the Minnesota Timberwolves.EDMONTON - Peter Pocklington, the man who launched the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, then loathed for decades for trading Wayne Gretzky, welled up with tears Friday when he came home to a standing ovation.Thank you Edmonton. Thank you, said Pocklington as a full house of fans at Rexall Place stood and cheered him at a reunion celebration of the 1984 Oilers team that won the teams first Stanley Cup.I wasnt sure what was going to happen, said Pocklington. He then paused and added, As you can imagine.Paul Coffey, who played for the Oilers from 1980-1987, was impressed with the crowds reaction. What just happened proved the people of Edmonton have a lot of class, Coffey said.Pocklington, 72, told the crowd that when he owned the Oilers he likened it to what he learned while walking one day past a field in France. There were men working in a field, he said, patiently and laboriously chipping away at stone blocks. One by one, said Pocklington, he asked the men what they were doing.Carving designs into the rock, they told him.Until he got to one final rock chipper, the only one who saw not the task, but the goal.I said: What are you doing? And he said Why, Im building a cathedral, said Pocklington. And this is what we wanted our team to do in this city, build a cathedral.Five cathedrals later, we had it done, he said to another round of applause.Pocklington, an entrepreneur from Ontario who made his first fortune selling cars, bought the Oilers when they were still in the old World Hockey Association. In 1978, he snapped up and signed teenage hockey wunderkind Wayne Gretzky from the Indianapolis Racers.A year later the Oilers and three other WHA teams joined the NHL.By 1984 Gretzky was the nucleus of a wildly talented group of kids who had taken the NHL by storm with their free-flowing criss-crossing European style of hockey. They lost in the Stanley Cup final in 1983 but the next year they won it all, and won four more championships by decades end. This week, old teammates returned for a 30th-year reunion, marching Friday night to bagpipes, clad in their Oiler jerseys and holding aloft the Stanley Cup.Gretzky, the NHLs all time leading scorer, was joined on stage by teammates including Coffey, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr.Earlier in thee week, Pocklington said he debated long and hard about whether he should come at all. Derrick Kindred Jersey. Writers on local social media gave him some free advice: stay home. One newspaper ran an online poll on whether Pocklington should be booed. Two thirds said yes.To them, the man known as Peter Puck will always be the one who sold Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 for $18M Cdn.The Gretzky sale came after the Oilers had won four cups and were only getting stronger. The sale was a gut punch to Edmonton. Diehards burned Pocklington in effigy. Radio stations doctored the popular Bobby McFerrin song to soothe a savage fan base (Ooh oo-ooh ooh ooh oo-ooh. Dont worry. Waynes Happy Now.)In Ottawa one politician demanded the trade be stopped as Gretzky was a national treasure.Earlier this week, Pocklington kept a low profile during reunion festivities, granting only one interview to a select group of journalists.During it, he reiterated the mantra that the sale was inevitable. Gretzky was a depreciating asset sure to command a stratospherically large contract that could not be sustained, he said. What about the angry masses, he was asked in Wednesdays interview.I dont really give a damn what the unwashed have to say, he replied. It was a fairy tale Stanley Cup run that didnt have a happy ending.Gretzkys departure marked the launch of a star exodus that had actually begun a year earlier, when an unhappy Coffey was traded to Pittsburgh in 1987.After the final cup win in 1990, the players were sold off or traded en masse to cut costs in a league that was seeing the gap widen between the haves and haves not.By 1992 Pocklington threatened to move the team to Hamilton unless he got a better revenue deal on the home rink. By 1997, awash in debt, he sold the team and moved to southern California. There he has continued to dabble in various enterprises while running afoul of the law.Currently he faces possible jail time in the U.S. for violating the terms of his probation stemming from his 2010 admission of perjury in a bankruptcy fraud case. Those troubles still loom. But for one brief moment Friday, a hard-headed businessman and a city that had felt abused and betrayed let bygones be bygones and joined as one to remember the glory of their times. MONTREAL - The spotlight is on Andrew Wenger as the Montreal Impact begin their third Major League Soccer regular season with a visit to FC Dallas on Saturday. Enes Kanter Jersey . Listen to the Impact vs. FC Dallas live on TSN Radio Montreal 690 starting at 8pm et. The first overall pick in the 2012 SuperDraft is expected to start at striker in place of star scorer Marco DiVaio, who is suspended for the opening three games. "Marco scored 20 goals last year, we all know that, so I dont think its going to land on any one guy to replace him," Wenger said this week. "Ill do my best to contribute, but itll be on every player on the team to contribute to a larger factor." DiVaio and midfielder Andres Romero were each suspended three games for their part in a melee that erupted late in their 3-0 playoff loss to the Houston Dynamo last season. And it could be a makeshift lineup on the field with their new captain Patrice Bernier and fullback Jeb Brovsky likely limited to substitute duty, if they play at all, as they recover from injuries. A possible lineup used in training this week had four players who were mainly substitutes last season, plus their first round draft pick Erik Miller, on the field. The suspensions and injuries and the fact that they had few off-season signings were why many observers predicted the Impact will take a step back after finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference and earning their first MLS playoff berth last season. Even the MLS website had them rated last in the 19-team league in their pre-season power rankings. The Impact hope to show they can do just as well or better. Former Chicago Fire manager Frank Klopas, who replaced the fiery Marco Schallibaum as head coach, will make his Impact debut in Dallas. The former MLS and Greek league player brings a blend of the European experience and a knowledge of how games are won in the more physical North American league. Klopas goal is to allow at least 10 fewer goals than the sometimes messy 49 they conceded in 34 games last season. His influence was felt at training camp, where the Impact failed to defend their Disney Pro-Classic trophy but put a lot of time into conditioning. He hopes to give more minutes to more players to keep the team fresh throughout the campaign. Schallibaums squad last season dominated MLS in the first half, but went 1-6-1 down the stretch. "With the amount of travel we do in this league, its not easy," said Klopas. "We play a lot of games, thats why you need depth. We have to be able to rely on everybody." The biggest challenge will be in the central defence, where former Italian giant Alessandro Nesta retired as a player but stayed with the club to do video analysis. Spaniard Adrian Lopez, who tore an ACL after one game when he joined the club in August, is a month away from resuming full training. And Colombian Nelson Rivas, whose only game in 2013 was the playoff loss in which he was ejected for two yellow cards, has a hamstring injury. That leaves their defence leader Matteo Ferreri as the only healthy regular in the middle. It appears lanky fullback Hassoun Camara will move inside to start the season. The Impact also traded midfielder and former captain Davy Arnaud to D.C. United and attackers Andrea Pisanu and Daniele Paponi were let go. It appeared that 21-year-old Uruguayan forward Santiago Gonzalez would be their lone signing, but midway through camp they got a boost with the arrival of former New York Red Bulls left back Heath Pearce. Pearce is coming off hip surgery in July, but is close to match fitness. His arrival could bump Brovsky to right back and make Camara a full time centre back. The Impact also hope that having midfielder Hernan Bernardello with the team from the start of camp will make him more effective than he was after joining the team last summer. The Argentine is the teams second designated player after DiVaio. He plays a holding midfield role, just in front of the defence. When Bernier returns, they are expected to be the teams engine, launching attacks from their back position. Bernardello will also allow Bernier, a clever passer, to move up more to support the attack. They hope that will spur Brazilian midfielder Felipe Martins, perhaps their best player in 2012, after a weak campaign under Schallibaum. Wenger feels getting more players involved will help the whole team. He said DiVaio was running away with the scoring title last season until teams realized you only needed to cover him tightly to shut down the Montreal attack. "If we can have a more balanced attack, that would be important," he said. Collin Warner, who is to replace Bernier for the opener, is another who may get more playing time under Klopas. "Theres a little more direction on where players are supposed to find each other in different holes and pockets on the field," said Warner. "Thats a positive for me, being a midfielder. "The overall style is a bit quicker, more one and two-touch, so thats good." Whether it translates into more points remains to be seen. Last season, the Impact opened with surprise wins at Seattle and Portland and rode that to a big first half. "Road games test morale and character," said Bernier. "Marco wont be here for three games, but a team doesnt win with one player. "Hes a very important piece up front, but guys have to seize the opportunity." Paul George Jersey .Sinclair, from Burnaby, B.C., led the Canadian team with three goals at the four-nation competition. She also earned tournament most valuable player honours. The Canadian captain scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and added the winning goal a minute later. Patrick Patterson Jersey . Although Spain could still advance out of the group stage, the game may have signalled the end of the run by a generation of Spanish stars whose quick passing, "tiki-taka" style delighted the world and helped them win the last three major tournaments. http://www.authenticthunderauthority.com/ray-allen-thunder-jersey-c-8/ . -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed Jerome Simpson, the former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver recently convicted on a felony drug charge.TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on the return of Paul Georges play, the defensive abilities of Chris Paul, the emergence of Mirza Teletovic, the struggles of Wesley Matthews and the successful formula of the Miami Heat. 1. Paul George (Pacers): Really looked like the All-Star hes been the past few years. Big time 39 point-12 rebound performance in Game #4 vs. the Wizards. Makes seven 3s and is clutch in so many instances for his team. Im not sure if the Pacers are truly back or if the Wizards dont know how to win as the stakes get higher but I will say that George looks back to normal and then some of late and thats a good sign for his club. 2. Chris Paul (Clippers): Yes, hes the best point guard in the game in my book and in spite of the fact that he gets 23 points and 10 assists in Game #4 vs. OKC, youve got to admire his grit and compete level taking on the defensive challenge of guarding Kevin Durant late. Hes an outstanding offensive player yet the thing that stands out to me is his ability to put the clamps on his opponent when need be, regardless of size. Tough competitor and special player. 3. Mirza Teletovic (Nets): Has made 10 3s in the past two games vs the Heat and has them shaking their heads on how to cover him. His stretch 4 game is quite a sight to behold when hes dropping long range shots. He opens the whole floor up for his teammates and has been a steady shooter (37 per cent) this season. Russell Westbrook Jersey. Looks like hes gaining confidence with each passing game. What a steal for GM Billy King. A skilled and tough second unit guy that teams would love to have. 4. Wesley Matthews (Blazers): Normally close to 40 per cent 3-point shooter during the regular season. Rockets and Spurs have made it a point of making him work for every open look he can get on the perimeter while only shooting 31 per cent in the playoffs. His ability to open things up in the two-man game between LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard has been critical to their success. Spacing is such a huge component of getting the matchups you want to be effective. Hes a marked man and the Spurs are making sure he takes tough shots. 5. Miami Heat Formula: Theyve got the best player on the planet in LeBron James yet its what they put around him that counts. Of course, Dwyane Wade is a Hall of Famer and when hes healthy, hes still very good. The stretch ability of this team is remarkable. In the playoffs, theyre shooting 41 per cent from behind the arc. Thats really hard to do. Their spacing and ball movement is impeccable and when you have Ray Allen, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, James Jones and Shane Battier camping out behind the line, you have to pick your poison; double LeBron and give up 3s or play him single coverage, defend the 3s and hope that LeBron doesnt destroy you. The system works and is well thought out. Fits their personnel to a T. Tough to stop. The Toronto Maple Leafs filled out their coaching staff Friday, naming two assistants to coach under Randy Carlyle. Robert Alford Jersey . Toronto Marlies head coach Steve Spott, and former Florida Panthers interim head coach Peter Horachek were named Carlyles assistants for the upcoming season. Spott took the Marlies to the conference finals in the Calder Cup playoffs last season after guiding the team to a 45-25-6 regular season record after taking over from Dallas Eakins. Horachek led the Panthers to a 26-36-4 record last season after taking over head coaching duties from the fired Kevin Dineen. Prior to his time in the Panthers organization, Horachek spent 10 seasons coaching under Barry Trotz in Nashville. Ty Sambrailo Jersey . The Raptors have to get through the pesky New York Knicks Wednesday at Madison Square Garden and can lock up the third spot in the Eastern Conference with a win or a Chicago loss in Charlotte. After extending Murrays contract through the 2015-16 season, Melnyk also extended that window and put something of a timer on that ultimate goal. "We think that we have all the core group in place," Melnyk said on a conference call Monday. "I think if we were on the same trajectory as we have been over the last few years, that its ultimately going to lead to a championship-type team." Murray, who was given the additional title of president of hockey operations, agreed to serve as an adviser for two seasons after his tenure as general manager is up. After building this group over the past six-plus seasons, he hopes not to have to wait too long for a title. "I think obviously the objective is to do it when Im here as a general manager," Murray said. "The core we have is a very good core, its young." And Murray knows that inexperience can lead to growing pains. The Senators struggled for much of the first half of this season, going 14-17-7 before a recent run put them within two points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Success made working out an extension for Murray easier because Melnyk wanted to negotiate during an "upswing" and "ensure that nobody ever would think that this was some kind of knee-jerk reaction to what was not an optimal beginning to the season." The timing seemingly had more to do with the departure of assistant GM Tim Murray, Bryans nephew, who was hired as the Buffalo Sabres head man last week. In addition to extending Murray, the Senators promoted Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee to assistant general managers. Dorion, who was already in charge of scouting and drafting, takes on contract-negotiation duties, while Lee, who was in charge of player development, also becomes GM of Ottawas AHL affiliate in Binghamton. "Its a great day for all of us going forward," Murray said. More moves coould be coming down the line to bolster the hockey operations department, though not on the management side. Andre Roberts Jersey. Murray said the Senators could perhaps use "another set of eyes" in the scouting department. "We lost a pretty good evaluator in Tim, so do we have enough?" Murray said. "I believe we do for now. If we have to do something in the future because of other coverage, then well address it at that time." For now, Murray can go about his job with some extra security. Hes considering moves before the trade deadline to bolster Ottawas playoff hopes, and he and his assistants will have some work to do on current contracts. "We understand that weve got about five players that are important parts of the present team that we have to make a decision on and do a contract for," he said. "Were kind of setting ourselves up to do that." Winger Milan Michalek and defenceman Chris Phillips are set to be unrestricted free agents this summer, while goaltender Robin Lehner will be a restricted free agent. Captain Jason Spezza, winger Bobby Ryan and defenceman Marc Methot are up in the summer of 2015. "As we go forward over the next few months well make contact with the agents and see in a couple cases if we can extend them," Murray said without naming names. "A couple of them we have to wait until July 1. But internally were making those decisions and well be in the best possible position, I believe to do (it), and then it will be up to the players agent to deal with us." Spezza and Ryans deals end a year before Murrays. Melnyk and Murray have discussed potential succession plans, but Monday wasnt the time they wanted to discuss that inevitability. "We just have to now kind of over the next little while evaluate people and decide what may happen," Murray said. "But thats a little ways down the road, and I hope we have a lot of success between now and that decision being made." ANAHEIM, Calif. Luke Joeckel Jersey . -- Howie Kendrick had a two-run single in his first game batting leadoff this season, Chris Iannetta hit a pair of RBI singles and the Los Angeles Angels beat Cleveland 6-4 Tuesday night, sending the Indians to their fifth straight defeat. Cleveland also lost All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis to an abdominal strain in the fourth inning. Jered Weaver (2-2) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking one. The Angels ace threw 90 pitches and was lifted after giving up four consecutive hits, including a two-run homer by Carlos Santana. Joe Smith, the seventh Angels pitcher, tossed a perfect ninth for his second save in two nights against his former teammates after he was thrust into the closers role last Friday in place of an ineffective Ernesto Frieri. Corey Kluber (2-3) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and four hits over 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks. The right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, retiring Albert Pujols on a popup after an intentional walk to Mike Trout and then striking out Raul Ibanez with the Indians trailing 2-0. The Angels put runners at the corners in the fifth with the help of a successful replay challenge by manager Mike Scioscia, after first base umpire Gabe Morales ruled J.B. Shuck out on a potential double-play grounder to second base that was corrected to a fielders choice. Shuck stole second, and Kendrick chased Kluber with a two-run single to centre for a 4-0 lead after a walk to Collin Cowgill. That was the only official at-bat for the Angels second baseman, who got plunked by Klubers second pitch of the game, had a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and walked in the seventh. Kendrick became the fifth player Scioscia has started in the leadoff spot. It was the 12th time Kendrick has started there in his nine-year career, the rest coming in 2010. He is 13 for 47 with two homers, 10 RBIs, four walks and eight runs scored when starting atop the lineup, and the Angels are 9-3 in those games. Santana, who hit a three-run homer in Monday nights series-opening 6-3 loss, got the Indians off the mat in the sixth with his two-run shot to right field after a single by Mike Aviles. Michael Brantley then snapped an 0-for-17 drought with a double and went to third on a single by Asdrubal Cabrera that chased Weaver. But Michael Kohn struck out Yan Gomes with the bases loaded after a two-out walk to David Murphy and a visit from pitching coach Mike Butcher. Yoslan Herrera gave way to Nick Maronde with the bases loaded and none out in the Cleveland seventh, and Santana drew a four-pitch walk that forced home a run. Brantley followed with a sacrifice fly that cut the Angels lead to 5-4 and brought in Kevin Jepsen, who struck out Cabrera and retired Jason Giambi on a deep fly. Aviles took over at second base in the fourth for Kipnis, who left with an abdominal strain on his right side after grounding into a double play. NOTES: Ibanez was the only player on the Angels roster that Kluber had faced before. ... Shuck ended a career-worst 0-for-22 drought with a hit-and-run single in the fourth. ... Weaver has pitched 873 innings and faced 3,492 batters since his last intentional walk on Sept. 4, 2009, at Kansas City. ... Cabrera and Santana had two-out bunt singles in the second and fourth, respectively. ... The Indians demoted Wednesdays scheduled starter, RHP Carlos Carrasco, to the bullpen with an 0-3 record and a 6.95 ERA in four outings. Dylan Olsen took a pass from Trocheck in the high slot, and his wrist shot slid under Andersons pads for his first goal of the season. He (Anderson) was outstanding, Panthers coach Gerard Gallant said. However, as TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie wrote on Twitter Wednesday, the process of getting Pronger into the office would likely require his status as an active NHLer being addressed. Pronger - who has not played an NHL game since the 2011-12 season - remains on Philadelphias long-term injured reserve. He has not formally retired. Since Pronger was over the age of 35 when he signed his last contract with the Flyers - which is worth an average annual value of $4.9 million through the end of the 2016-17 season - his annual average would go against the Flyers salary cap obligations. This situation has been avoided over the past two-plus seasons by virtue of the injured reserve. To this end, McKenzie reports, the NHL Players Association is involved. NHLPA spokesperson Jonathan Weatherdon told McKenzie that the league contacted the NHLPA about this matter yesterday and our discussions with them are ongoing. We are working to get this matter resolved in a timely manner.a€? Even if an agreement were to be reached on his active status between the NHLPA and the Department of Player Safety, however, a potential conflict of interest would allso factor in to the decision. Devin Harris Jersey. A job with Player Safety would potentially give Pronger input into suspensions/fines/discipline involving all 30 NHL teams, McKenzie wrote, The issue with Pronger, of course, is there may be perception of an affiliation with an individual club if hes still on LTIR. The official reason Pronger has remained on the injured reserve is post-concussion syndrome, though the big defenceman also underwent knee surgery in Nov. of 2011. That surgery came nine days after what currently stands as Prongers final NHL game: Nov. 19, 2011 in Winnipeg against the Jets. One of the dominant blueliners of his era, Pronger has scored 157 goals and 541 assists in 1,167 career NHL games with the Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers. He won a Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007 and his individual accolades include a Hart Trophy as the NHLs Most ValuabNHL Department of Safety le Player and the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the leagues top defenceman while with the Blues in 2000. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington decided it was time to shake up his lineup a bit. Max Unger Jersey . With a few switches in the batting order, and an impressive performance by young starter Nick Tepesch, the Rangers ended their longest losing streak in nearly nine years. Adrian Beltre homered and Shin-Soo Choo had three hits in his return to the leadoff spot while Tepesch allowed only three singles over 7 1-3 scoreless innings, and the Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Friday night. "He was outstanding. We needed a well-pitched game and he gave it to us," said Washington, who liked his lineup. "Well run the same one out there tomorrow and see what happens." The Rangers went into the opener of the weekend series mired in its first eight-game losing streak since August 2005. "Its nice to end any negative streak," said Beltre, who added a sacrifice fly in the eighth that proved to be the margin of victory. "Its one of those things, you dont want to throw any at-bat away." Minnesota has lost its last nine road games, including a three-game sweep at the Los Angeles Angels before getting to Texas. The Twins came up short after scoring four runs in the ninth off Texas closer Joakim Soria, making only his second appearance since June 14. Choo led off for the first time in 18 games while Carlos Pena, in only his fourth game back with the Rangers, took over the No. 3 spot where Choo had hit .149 (10 for 67) since June 7. And Washingtons change paid off immediately when Choo had a leadoff single in the first and scored on Beltres ninth homer, which just cleared the fence and landed in the Rangers bullpen in right-centre field. "I said earlier that doesnt make a difference. I knew this would happen after the game and I was sure people would ask me about it, but its not ... I dont think anything changed as far as approach," Choo said about leading off, though he acknowledged that, "Im a little more comfortable there, Ive done it for the last two years." Tepesch (3-3) struck out five, walked two and hit two batters, while matching his longest major league start. He has won all three of his career starts against the Twins, allowing only three earned runs in 20 2-3 innings. "Just able to command all four of my pitches, and just commanding them in the zone and out of the zone," Tepesch said. Kevin Correia (4-9) allowed four runs and six hits over six innings. The right-hander, who struck out three and walked two, had given up only two earned runs over 18 innings his previous three starts. Jason Frasor and Neal Cotts each got an out in the eighth after Tepesch gave up a one-out hit to Minnesota leadoff hitter Brian Dozer. Jorge Polancos two-run triple in the ninth for his first major league hit that made it 5-4. Soria, who had given up just one earned over 20 2-3 innings his previous 22 games, then got a strikeout and grounder to end the game. Luis Sardinas and Choo had RBI doubles in the fifth, both on balls that left fielder Josh Willingham tried to catch. Sardinas hit a sinking liner down the left-field line that rolled into the corner after Willingham made a diving attempt to catch it. Choo hit a flyball that glanced off Willinghams glove when he ran into the 14-foot fence. "Diving full out down the line, diving up against the wall in left field," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "What cant you like about that? Hes trying to make a play." NOTES: Rangers ace Yu Darvish (7-4, 2.62 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday. He lost his last two starts, allowing 12 runs (eight earned) over 11 innings. ... MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was arrested for a second time in three days because he sent threatening messages to a woman he was living with that "rose to a terroristic level," police said Monday. Wilson Chandler Jersey . Authorities in Medina, Minn., released the details one day after Cunningham was jailed for another alleged incident with the woman he had been living with for the previous eight months. Cunningham had already been charged with felony domestic assault for allegedly choking the woman last week. Police said they received a call from the woman in the early morning hours on Sunday saying that Cunningham had violated a protection order by contacting her. "When the officer arrived and reviewed the messages, they were direct and rose to a terroristic level," the police statement read. Cunningham surrendered Sunday and turned over his cellphone and computer as part of the investigation. The Associated Press left a message with Cunninghams attorney seeking comment. Cunningham remained in custody following his second arrest, but has not been charged. He was scheduled for an initial court appearance on Monday afternoon related to his assault charges. The Timberwolves said Sunday they were gathering information about Cunninghams latest arrest. "The situation with Dante Cunningham is very fluid and we continue to monitor all available information," the team said. "We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behaviour described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate." He played for the Timberwolves in Orlando on Saturday night. The NBAs collective bargaining agreement requires the league and the Timberwolves to allow Cunningham to return to work while the legal process plays out. Cunningham started against the Magic for the injured Kevin Love and had 12 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes. In his fifth year in the league, Cunningham is averaging 6.1 points and 4.1 rebounds this season. ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -- The Grand Rapids Griffins are back atop the Western Conference thanks to a gritty come-from-behind win Saturday night. The Griffins scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Abbotsford Heat 5-2 in American Hockey League action. With his club down 2-0 after 20 minutes of action, head coach Jeff Blashill made a goaltending change that seemed to spark his club. Tom McCollum allowed two goals on 10 shots, but Petr Mrazek came in and stopped all 13 shots he faced. "It wasnt Tommys fault for the goals, but it was one of those things where you want to change it up to change the momentum," said Griffins captain Jeff Hoggan. "Petr came in and did well. It was huge for us." David McIntyre gave the Griffins the lead for the first time in the game at 8:39 of the third when he redirected Nick Jensens point shot from the side of the net. "The play was started by Jordan Tootoo, getting the puck into the zone," said McIntyre. "It was a great pass from Nick Jensen. It was right on the tape, it was real easy for me." Andrj Nestrasil, Teemu Pulkkinen, Hoggan and Tootoo also scored for Grand Rapids (35-17-5), which has won five consecutive games and moved past Texas - whos game Saturday was suspended - for first in the Western Conference. "Weve been up and down since the All-Star break," said Hoggan. "We were flat in the first but stuck with it. It was a big win for us (because) thats a good team over there." Max Reinhart had two first-period goals for Abbotsford (33-18-6), which is winless in four games. Joey MacDonald made 37 saves in the loss. "They do a great job in the offensive zone of forechecking, and in the neutral zone - theyre sound system-wise," said Heat captain Dean Arsene. "We just had too many turnovers, and a skilled team like that in transition, they just ate us up." Reinhart got the Heat on the board early, deflecting Arsenes point shot past McCollum at the 1:23 mark. Chris Paul USA Jersey. The North Vancouver, B.C., native scored his second of the night with just 12 seconds to go in the first period when he finished off a give-and-go with Corey Locke, beating McCollum short side, top corner. Thats when Grand Rapids changed goaltenders. "I would have probably done the same," said Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward of his counterparts decision. "He needed a change, a spark. We got to McCollum. We (previously) beat him (in Grand Rapids), so (Blashill) probably felt it was time for that change. They did a good job of keeping the game 2-0. We had a couple of looks to go up 3-0 but we didnt make those things happen, even when Mrazek was in net." Nestrasil got Grand Rapids on the board at 13:20 of the second period. After a pair of Abbotsford players failed to clear the puck it bounced right to the Czech Republic native, who quickly beat MacDonald glove side for his seventh of the season. The Griffins tied the game at 4:34 of the third period. From behind the net, Hoggan quickly stuffed the puck between the post and MacDonalds skate. It was just the second goal the captain scored since Christmas. "We racked up a lot of shots, we just kept getting pucks to the net," said Hoggan. "Joey Mac played the puck behind the net but I ended up having some space to walk out front." McIntyre scored to put the visitors up four minutes later. "It was a good pass from Jensen, backdoor," said Hoggan. "We were struggling to score goals, so it was nice to get five tonight." Tootoo scored an insurance marker with 4:09 to go in the game, picking the corner with a wrist shot from the face-off dot. "Obviously (Tootoo) is a grizzled veteran," said McIntyre. "Hes played a lot of big games so he knows what it takes to win. That was a great shot." Pulkkinen added an empty netter with less than two minutes to play, giving him five goals in three games. NEW YORK, N. Jarrett Allen Jersey .Y. - As if they were enjoying a morning coffee together, Pete Carroll and John Fox fulfilled their final media obligations leading to the Super Bowl. Relaxed, self-assured and even charming, the coaches of the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos answered questions for 30 minutes on Friday, joking with each other and the audience. No grumpy one-sentence responses. No agitated reactions to edgy queries. At one point, Fox wondered if he could say a specific crude word to the audience on hand. Watching on television, he then went ahead and used the word. Carroll immediately quipped: "You cant say that, John," eliciting laughs from reporters — and from Fox. Neither man seemed overwhelmed or even antsy about the biggest game of his life coming up on Sunday, even as they sat with the Vince Lombardi Trophy that is given to the NFL champion. "I think its a pinnacle for probably everybody that does what we do," said the 58-year-old Fox, who was with the Giants when they lost the 2001 Super Bowl to Baltimore, and led the Panthers there when they fell to New England in 2004. "Its something you work really hard (for). "As Pete mentioned earlier, you take individuals and try to paint a picture of where you want to get to. I think this is the pinnacle of it. Unlike different levels of football, theres only one happy camper at that end. Thats going to be the team hoisting that trophy." Carroll has hoisted championship hardware, but in college with Southern Cal. This is his first trip to the big game — he had never even attended a Super Bowl before this one. "The trophy really does symbolize the ultimate challenge and competitiveness in our sport and in our world of coaching or playing," said the 62-yard-old Carroll. "To dream about being in this position as a kid and then working all through the years of coaching, battling and watching other guys do it and for the first time for us; its a tremendous honour. "Its a tremendous opportunity and it creates an extraordinary challenge to see if you can be the one. It symbolizes a tremendous amount to all of us. We all live with that, our players and our coaches. Its great to be here, and (Im) thrilled to be doing it, too. It makes for so much fun. The whole buildup, the whole following, knowing its a global event on game day just adds to the fun of this thing. The challenge continues to be out there for us to reach for, so its very exciting." Both coaches have defensive backgrounds, and they made note of that. Yes, the NFL has become a light-up-the-scoreboard league — and no team ever did it better than Foxs Broncos, who scored 606 points this season. But Fox and Carroll made their reputations as defensive co-ordinators before becoming head coaches. Carroll spent one season in charge of the Jets and three with the Patriots before heading to USC. Fox led Carolina for nine seasons. "Youve got a couple old DB coaches here, and its interesting thats how it turned out," Carroll said. "It is an offensive era that were in, and with all the passing game its gone crazy. Maybe its fitting that weve been fighting our whole life trying to slow this thing down, and we get a chance to do it here on the biggest stage. "Really we have very similar paths and the fact that were defensive guys, maybe that gives the defensive guys hope that maybe we can hire one of those guys in the league soon." That already is happening, perhaps with the theory that strong defensive minds can slow down the points parade. Of the seven head coaching hires this year, four were filled by offence-oriented coaches (Bill OBrien, Jim Caldwell, Ken Whisenhunt, Jay Gruden) and three by defensive guys (Lovie Smith, Mike Zimmer, Mike Pettine). "I came up with a guy, Chuck Noll, who is a defensive guy, who I learned a lot from," Fox said of the Hall of Fame coach of the Steelers. "Ive been blessed to be around a lot of great people from ownerships on down to general managers, front office people, as well as coaches. You always take pride. This is a prideful thing to be in this position and play in a game like this with such great history. "Dont forget about those defensive guys moving forward." Now that the NHL has agreed to pay Wayne Gretzky money owed to him by former Phoenix Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes - around $7 to $8 million - The Great One may be interested in taking a front office job somewhere in the league. Keith McGill Jersey . The question is, where is he most likely to go? An obvious choice is the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky won four Stanley Cups with the Oilers from 1979-1988 before “the trade” sent him packing to sunny California to play with the Los Angeles Kings. Reuniting with Edmonton, a team thats struggled for a few years now, might be a match made in heaven. On the other hand, already having reached the peak of the sport numerous times in Edmonton, No. 99 might decide to stay close to his hometown. The Brantford, Ont. native was rumoured to be joining the Toronto Maple Leafs last summer. Being part of the group trying to bring the Cup back to Ontarios capital for the first time in 46 years might be too hard to resist. Tim Leiweke, President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, has already made some big statements since taking over the job this past summer and hiring Gretzky would definitely make a splash. TSN Hockey Insider, Darren Dreger, thinks Gretzky would be willing to listen if the Leafs engaged him in conservation about joining MLSE. Then theres the big stage and intrigue of the Big Apple, working with the New York Rangers. Gretzky retired as a member of the Rangers in 1999 and going back might be in the cards. Los Angeles - another former team - could also be an option. His family, including his celebrity daughter Paulina, lives there; which could be a factor. Gretzky attended a Washington Capitals game last month, sitting with billionaire owner Ted Leonsis. Gretzky has no ties with the team, but with Leonsis having very deep pockets, money might be an intriguing factor. With the Phoenix Coyotes now having stable ownership, the familiarity of the organization might interest The Great One who coached there from 2005-2009. Maybe hell decide to go somewhere no one expects, or maybe, hell continue to enjoy retired life and spend time with his family. So we ask: Which NHL club is Wayne Gretzky most likely to go to? It appears they will find out in their fourth playoffs-or-bust season finale against an NFC East rival since 2008 -- and their first elimination game without Romo in 10 years. Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. Danny White, the last longtime Dallas starter who failed to meet Super Bowl expectations, challenges anyone to come up with a current quarterback who could do better in Romos situation. And hes not kidding. "Name whoever you want," said White, who lost three straight NFC championship games in the 1980s and lost his job to Gary Hogeboom. "I dont care if its Tom Brady, if its Peyton Manning, if its Aaron Rodgers. I can make an argument for Tony getting better results than anybody else could get." Romo has the same support from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on down, which is why the question of whether hes going to play against the Eagles is the hottest topic of the week in the NFL now that the Packers have said Rodgers will return from an seven-game absence for a similar winner-take-all battle for the NFC North title against Chicago. Maybe the Cowboys are trying to keep the Eagles guessing when it comes to Romo, who injured his back during a 24-23 win over Washington that included a fourth-down touchdown pass to DeMarco Murray in the final 2 minutes. Or maybe the Cowboys just cant bring themselves to believe the franchise leader in touchdown passes -- ahead of Troy Aikman, White and Roger Staubach -- is going to miss the game that decides whether they get a playoff game at their $1.2 billion stadium or go home early for the fourth straight season. One things for sure. The confidence of his teammates wasnt shaken after Romos latest crushing error -- an interception that let the Packers finish a rally from a 23-point deficiit in a 37-36 win two weeks ago. Lee Smith Jersey. Never mind that Romo is 1-6 in elimination games -- three losses in the playoffs and three in season finales against NFC East rivals with the division title and a playoff spot on the line, including the past two years against the New York Giants and Washington. Romo, whose only playoff win was against Philadelphia in the 2009 season, ruined the last chance for a rally against the Redskins last season with an interception late in the fourth quarter. "Everything we are and we have accomplished over the last few years, that you believe in and you hold on to, is because of him," said tight end Jason Witten, the franchise leader in catches who came into the league with Romo in 2003. "What he creates week in and week out, day in and day out, I dont think you look at a couple of plays and determine. I think that would be foolish for anybody to do that." Jones unwavering support for Romo -- backed by the off-season signing of a six-year, $108 million contract extension with more guaranteed money than Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco -- could get a little tricky if Orton leads an improbable win against the Eagles. Philadelphia jumped from a 2 1/2-point favourite to a 6 1/2-point pick after news of the Romo injury broke. The Cowboys obviously arent worried about those implications at the moment. Theyre simply trying to tell the world they can beat the high-scoring Eagles without the guy who carries the label of the quarterback who cant win the big one, or keeps finding ways to lose it. "Tony is our guy but weve got to move ahead and go from there," receiver Dez Bryant said. "For us, we believe in our quarterbacks. I dont think its going to be much of a big issue for us." Romo didnt practice Wednesday or Thursday, and coach Jason Garrett said he wasnt involved in many meetings either. He missed his regular weekly media session Thursday and hasnt been seen during the open portion of practice or in the locker room. And yet, the Cowboys just cant seem to let go. "I think weve gotten used to him kind of limping around and finding a way and somehow, some way, Wednesday rolls around and hes back out there," Witten said. In the other group match, Zenit St. Petersburg will host Benfica Lisbon with both teams looking to stave off elimination.A favourite of the fans, it was during his stay in Germany that Berbatov caught the eye of big European teams. He joined the club when he was 20 from CSKA Sofia and was one of the young stars of the Leverkusen side that reached the final of the 2002 Champions League.Berbatov became a stalwart during the 2003-04 season under the guidance of coach Klaus Augenthaler, scoring 16 goals and assisting on nine others in 33 league matches.Berbatov, who left the club to join Tottenham, has recovered in time from a groin injury that sidelined him for nearly two months and is expected to start against his former club. Here are some things to know ahead of Wednesdays matches:___HOW THEY ADVANCEAlready with nine points, Bayer Leverkusen will clinch the group with a win and will be through with a draw against Monaco.Monaco has five points and cannot go through even with a win.Zenit has four points and will be out if it loses and Monaco wins. But Kiessling fell into a slump this season and failed to score in 14 consecutive matches in all competitions. He ended his slump over the weeks, scoring the first goal in a 3-1 victory in Hannover. We didnt attach much importance to this, but we are glad that people will stop counting for how many minutes Stefan hasnt scored, Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said.___ENRAGING JARDIMMonaco coach Lenoardo Jardim has been given the difficult task of rebuilding a team deserted by Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez but filled with talented youngsters such as midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Anthony Martial. But the Portuguese coach is lamenting the lack of professionalism shown by the young generation.I think the young are not professional enough. You need to tell them about the discipline and rigour required in this trade, he said. Jonas, who has seven goals in six appearances, was a late signing and wasnt registered for the competition. That leaves Enzo Perez and Eduardo Salvio to make the difference from behind the attack. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari resigned after the team failed to win the World Cup, the Brazilian Football Confederation said Monday. Kris Versteeg Jersey . Scolari promised to win the tournament at home, but Brazil was eliminated in the semifinals by a disastrous 7-1 loss to eventual champion Germany that matched the national teams worst defeat in its 100-year history. Brazil also lost 3-0 to the Netherlands in the third-place match. Scolaris contract ended after the World Cup and he handed over the command of the team after Saturdays match, saying it would be up to the confederation to decide whether he would remain at the helm of the five-time world champions. In a statement, the confederation said President Jose Maria Marin accepted what it called "Scolaris resignation." "Scolari and his staff deserve our respect and our gratitude," the statement said. "They were responsible for making the Brazilian people regain their love for the Selecao even though we did not reach our greater goal (of winning the title)." Scolaris replacement was not immediately announced. Assistant Carlos Alberto Parreira, the coach who led Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title, was also leaving. The confederation said Marin would give further explanations in a news conference on Thursday. Scolari, who led Brazil to the 2002 World Cup title, had said after Brazils loss to the Netherlands that he would turn in a report of his work with the national team and Marin would then analyze what he would like to do. Scolari publicly apologized to fans after the loss to Germany, saying he knows it will never be forgotten, and defended his work with Brazil since returning in late 2012. In 29 matches, he led the nation to 19 wins, six draws and four losses. Brazil won last years Confederations Cup, the World Cup warm-up tournament. "I dont think you can analyze the entire work based on only one disastrous result," Scolari said after Brazils loss to the Dutch. "I think the job was well done." The once-popular coach was loudly booed by fans after Brazil ended the home tournament on Saturday. Despite high expectations, Brazil struggled throughout the competition, finishing with three wins, two draws and two losses. Scolari had been betting on young striker Neymar to carry the team to the title, but he was shelved by a back injury in the quarterfinals. Scolari was picked to lead the 2014 team mostly because of his popularity and experience from the 2002 title, but many critics said he was outdated as a coach. Before rejoining the national team, Scolari was coming off relegation in the Brazilian league with traditional club Palmeiras. Among those touted to replace Scolari are Tite and Muricy Ramalho, who have been successful with local clubs in recent years. Ramalho is a four-time Brazilian champion, while Tite led popular Corinthians to the Club World Cup title in 2012. There is also talk in local media about international coaches, including Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, and Chiles Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli. Brazils next official tournament is the 2015 Copa America. The team is expected to play four friendlies this year, the first one against Colombia on Sept. 5 in Miami. It will also play Ecuador on Sept. 8 in New York, Argentina on Oct. 11 in Beijing and Turkey on Nov. 12 in Istanbul. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka -- who were all playing their opening matches of the tournament -- also won on Saturday. Federer, the four-time champion seeded seventh, beat French qualifier Pail-Henri Mathieu. The Swiss star was coming off his 78th career title last week in Dubai. "Its important to win," he said. "Its a lot different from Dubai. You have to force a bit more, but Im satisfied." In a late match, the top-seeded Nadal rallied to beat Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. "He is not the right player to play against in the first round," Nadal said. "Hes not the right player because what you want to find in the first round is rhythm and against him every point is different. He goes quick to the net. They dont give you that few games to find your rhythm, to find a way that you want to play." Nadal is 41-6 in his 10 appearances here and has made it to the semifinals or better for the past eight years. But he said worries about his back affected his serve during the 2-hour, 24-minute contest. "With my serve I was doing nothing. When that happens, the opponent is able to play more aggressive, play more confident and in the end, eight double faults, I give him an opportunity to win a lot of free points," Nadal said. "I was a little bit scared for the back. I am not feeling 100 per cent confident with my serve. But probably that match is going to help me understand that I can start to serve normal again." The fifth-seeded Murray topped Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and the third-seeded Wawrinka, playing for the first time since winning the Australian Open, beat Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-5. Jonas Hiller Jersey. Haas, who will be 36 on April 3, rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jeremy Chardy. Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber dropped out, falling 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. Aleksandra Wozniack of Blainville, Que., also beat No. 15 Sabine Lisicki 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Murray reached the final in 2009, but has mostly struggled in the event. "I think its important sometimes to think about it, because when youre not expecting it to happen and then it does, thats when it can kind of take you by surprise and you might panic a little bit or worry," Murray said. "But I dont feel like (that happened) today. I was a set and a break down. I got broken three times in a row the end of the first set, beginning of the second. I just kind of kept going and found a way to win, which is always the most important thing." Mikhail Youzhny, seeded 14th, withdrew because of a back injury and the American mens contingent was trimmed from its initial 14 members to one after losses by Michael Russell, Sam Querrey, Tim Smyczek and Ryan Harrison. The only U.S. player remaining is 12th seed John Isner, who will face Nikolay Davydenko on Sunday. Li is playing her second event since winning the Australian Open. "This is the first match after Doha, two weeks, and of course for I cannot be 100 per cent for the first match," Li said. "But I was happy. At least I can learn something from todays match." Li will face Karolina Pliskova, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over No. 28 Klara Zakopalova. Eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova, No. 11 Ana Ivanovic and No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova also won early matches. WINNIPEG -- After missing four games with an injured hand, forward Evander Kane is back in the Winnipeg Jets lineup for the first time since Paul Maurice took over as head coach. Chris Carpenter Jersey . "I dont think my role changes too much," Kane said Monday, as the team prepared to fly to California for games in Anaheim and San Jose. "Obviously you are going to have to earn your ice time and play well and show him what you can do. Other guys have had three games to show what they can do and this will be my first one so Im going to have to be good." The left-winger has been out since Jan. 7 when he suffered a hand injury in a fight during Winnipegs 4-2 home loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Although hes missed 12 games due to injury this season, Kane still has 14 goals and 11 assists. The Jets (22-23-5) have won three in a row since Maurice took over but are still a point below .500 as they face two of the toughest teams in the Western Conference. Anaheim (37-9-5) leads the conference and the NHL with 79 points and hasnt lost a game in regulation time at home. San Jose is 16-2-3 in their own building. "We had as much success as we could have had this week, we won three games, so well take whatever thats worth," said Maurice. "Im much more concerned that they have confidence in each other in what were trying to accomplish becoming more clearly defined. I feel in practice that Im seeing the things weve asked them to do come a little bit easier." Maurice said Kane will skate on a line with Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. "I like the possibilities of that line. Id like to think Im going to have some patience with it cause Id like to see it work. At the same time I do have another lineup, Ive got another place as well that I wouldnt mind seeing him because hes a real strong player and he can be a real benefit to whoever he plays with." While on paper the Jets seem no match for either Anaheim or San Jose, "Ive never felt that on a one game," said Maurice. "Over the course of the season yes, in any one game no, the best is not that far from the bottom and thats why its a competition." Kanes father will also be on the road swing, along with other dads as the team hosts a father-son trip. Wheeler says it feels a lot better heading west with three wins behind them instead of three more losses and some confidence that they are playing the way their new coach wants. "It definitely helps to have that confidence, the way were playing and what were doing," he said. He also said theyve been pretty comfortable from the start with what Maurice has been urging them to do. "I think hes trying to utilize the things we do the best to give ourselves a chance to win. Hes trying to use our team speed, use our size, things that we do well to give us an opportunity to play our best every night." Meanwhile, with Dustin Byfugliens move to forward, rookie defenceman Jacob Trouba is seeing a lot of ice time. "Were not running him against the other teams best all night long," said Maurice, but he added that he feels Trouba can hold his own and needs to learn to compete with the best. "Theres going to be some mistakes, we live with those." Trouba had a pair of goals -- including the overtime winner -- Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers. Trouba is now second among all rookie defencemen in goals with seven this season and trails only Bostons Torey Krug who has 10. In points Trouba sits fifth among rookie defencemen with 16.
